Ditch the January Detox and Try Veganuary

OK, I’m only going to admit this to you just this once, so soak it up while you can. I didn’t exactly follow any of my own advice when it came to succumbing to Christmas confectionary. In fact, not only did I not “step away from those special edition boxes of chocolates” as I advised last month; I continue to purchase said naughtiness to this day. I know I know, I’ve put shame on the whole sustainable community and I deserve every inch of the added layer nestled around my waist!

But as per tradition, January is a time of getting fit, getting healthy, and generally getting off our butts after a month of eating, drinking and being far too merry! I’m sure I’m not the only one making health food shopping lists, avoiding alcohol and setting a 6am alarm for that early morning run (which predictably gets put off for “one more day“). According to the world, we need to repent for our Christmas sins with a diet and exercise regime stricter than our bodies have ever seen!

January detoxes suck – fact!

Sound a bit too depressing for the start of a bright new year? Well perhaps swapping your January detox for Veganuary might just keep that merry glow on your face! Instead of living a month of salads and side stiches in the cold winter air, join me for a fun month of experimenting with new foods and trying out new pamper products; all good for our bodies, animals, and the planet!

Veganuary is a simple concept: try living vegan for just one month, and feel full of energy, wellbeing and general smugness for being compassionately awesome! And if you’re already vegan it’s a great chance to reignite your enthusiasm, and discover some exciting new recipes and products. I know I certainly need to step out of my lazy cooking habits and explore a little more.

Check out the awesome Veganuary website to find heaps of easy recipes, product guides and vegan FAQs. You can also find out why getting involved can not only help cut out cholesterol, lower your blood pressure, and reduce the risk of diabetes and heart disease; but makes logical sense for our environment too. Win win I’d say!

More importantly, keep an eye out over the next month for some of my insider tips and ideas for easy veganism on a budget. Now that’s what I call a positive start to the year!

  1. I was a vegetarian for over a decade with a few bouts of veganism, but I started feeling off balance. Adding a little humanely raised animal products to my diet made me feel much better. I believe that we evolved to eat some meat, but that we probably didn’t have it every day, and certainly not at every meal. So, I still like to do a vegan cleanse a couple of times a year. Basically, for up to 10 days, I will eat only fruits, veggies, nuts, seeds, olive oil and coconut oil.

I went to the Veganuary website and was a little disappointed to see so many packaged foods being promoted.

    1. That sounds like a great balance. I must admit I never began veganism as an all or nothing forever kind of thing, I just haven’t been able to stomach diary or meat since I cut them from my diet. I have no issues with people who eat the occasional animal product if they have been sourced responsibly.

I know its a bit pants isn’t it?! Though I imagine for those completely new to the concept it reassures people that there are products out there to make the step easier. Over time I’m sure newbies would explore more fresh produce using the websites recipes?
