Trading Traditions and Ditching Consumerism

It’s happening; I can feel it in the air. It’s barely November and already the steady increase of crazy Christmas consumerism has begun! As soon as the flurry of Halloween costumes, confectionary and unidentified themed plastic objects left shop windows, in popped the Christmas displays to fill the capitalist gap and empty our pockets. Still, no one is forcing us to buy things we don’t need. Are they?

In my previous life (not the one where I was a lucky cat who slept all day in a warm Californian sun…) I worked in retail management. It was my job to make people purchase more; from creating eye catching window displays, and buying in exciting “new” stock, to strategically placing impulse items by the till to catch people out as they stood in the queue, bored and eyes wandering. Christmas was when the big boys came out; the sparkle, the colourfully Christmassy packaging (exactly the same item as usual, only green and red) and of course, the wonderful sales charm. Your Green Life: You Hippies

It’s not secret that I think of myself as a bit of a hippy, and I happily wear that badge with pride. So it comes as no surprise that I’m a little in love with this weeks interviewees; the fun, quirky and lovable You Hippies! Landon and Meagan (& cat Mau)  stand for everything A Lazy Girl Goes Green is all about; living in a compassionate, thoughtful and collaborative way, for a happier and healthier life. So obviously I’d want to hear more about their own green journey…

5 Decoration ideas using Autumn Leaves

Greetings lazy green people!! How is Autumn treating you so far?

Despite living in an area known for its summer beach surf spots, I have to admit that Autumn is by far my favorite time of year. I love the fresh chill in the air, the open fires, hot chocolates and the stunning warm colours of autumnal leaves. My house is surrounded by woodland and I have been trying to get out there as much as possible and make the most of any daylight I can get!

I have been trying, and mostly failing, to make some pretty decorations to bring nature into my house; but as we all know, I’m really not that arty! So instead, I thought I’d share 5 of my favorite ideas for homemade Autumn leaf decorations. Hopefully you will be more successful than me!

Your Green Life: The Double Life of Mrs M.

This weeks Your Green Life interview is with a lady whose writing has kept with me captivated for several months now; with her fascinating, honest and often humorous blog The Double Life of Mrs M.  I was intrigued by Megs description of her blog as a space “...devoted to nurturing my other personae, the ones that barely got a look-in during the working week.” something which I think we all strive to find in some way or another.

But this is exactly what you get with The Double Life of Mrs M; a multifaceted blog which covers (but is never limited to) food, gardening, traditional crafts and sustainable living. The fact that this last subject is interwoven among many other aspects of Megs personality, struck me as a very real and honest approach to green living, and I wanted to know more about this wonderful Mrs M… Continue reading Your Green Life: The Double Life of Mrs M.

Natural Flea Repellents for Pets

I have two wonky cats that I love very much. Timid but loving Merlin is my 3 legged black wonder and Mango, the one-eyed ginger, is a sleepy ball of fluff.

But as much as I love cuddling up with them whenever I get the chance, this time of year they are prone to fleas and those blighters aren’t so fun! As Merlin has a skin allergy problem, I treat them both with stronghold every month, which usually does the trick. But often my soft furnishings get left out of the process! A Contradiction in Ethics: Can You Really Be Vegan and Green?

When, about a month ago, the wonderful Zero Waste Millennial posted a blog titled “Is it possible to be Vegan and Zero waste?” and began it with the immediate answer “no”, it got me thinking. I have wondered myself if it’s possible to champion animal rights, human rights, environmental issues (which in itself is a huge subject…) and live as happily and healthily as possible; whilst still having fun and enjoying the pleasures in life!

But what happens when contradictions in our ethics occur? What if the vegan option isn’t organic but the meat option is? Or the products which avoid exploitation of humans are not sustainable or chemical free? Or your beautiful, naturally sourced fabric from a fair trade cotton producer in India incurred an incredibly large carbon footprint? Surely something has to give? Zero Waste Week: Less than 2 weeks to go!

Over the last 5 months – as I’ve attempted to live greener without changing my whole lifestyle drastically – I have learnt a lot along the way. From shopping short cuts and lazy vegan recipes, to informative research on the issues our world currently faces; I have shared my experience and ideas with all you lovely people!

But one thing I have yet to conquer is my battle with waste; something which fills me with dread every time I’m faced with yet another statistic about the pollution caused by our own consumerist habits. I have shared a few waste reduction ideas over the last few months, but food waste is still high on my agenda, so I have taken the pledge to be involved in this year’s Zero Waste Week; in a bid to kick start this battle with the bin!
