Dear Cafe Scrouge: an open letter from a vegan to Cafe Rouge

Dear Cafe Rouge

I’m sure you will agree that the festive season leading up to Christmas day is a time for family, friends, fun and feasting – something I imagine you hope to host in your national chain of French cuisine restaurants.

Having had a large majority of my family live in the South West of France for the last 29 years – and thus spending the large majority of my childhood holidays there – I am very partial to the French style of eating and its focus on rich, decadent flavours. Hearty bean cassoulet, warming onion soup and wine drenched mushroom bourguignon are some of my favourites; all washed down with a glass of classic Bordeaux.

It may surprise then, if I admit that I haven’t actually visited your restaurant before. In fact, I haven’t even contemplated it. Why? Well, that’s because I am a vegan.  Continue reading Dear Cafe Scrouge: an open letter from a vegan to Cafe Rouge

Vegan Dining in Hobart: Monsoon Thai Fusion

I’m not going to lie, if there is one thing living in Australia has bestowed on me, it’s a healthy (or not so. You decide…) addiction to Thai food. Whilst the UK enjoys a large tasty melting pot of Indian and Chinese cuisine, the Aussies sure know how to put on a good Thai spread.

Now, Sydney has it’s fair share of great vegan Thai restaurants. Blossoming lotus, a modest buffet restaurant in Newtown which boast a giant “Vegetarian Food” sign outside, is my ultimate fav. Their mock lemongrass “ribs” and crispy tofu strips have been my faithful friend from the very first week I came to Sydney.

However, when a couple of weeks ago I was lucky enough to visit the beautiful quaint Tasmanian city of Hobart, I encountered a whole new kind of vegan Thai heaven. Monsoon Thai Fusion was recommended to me by a friend from back home who has been living  in Hobart and had been blown away by their vegan dishes. Naturally I had to investigate her claims of divine yumminess and, despite not actually being hungry at all after a late lunch, I went all out. Just for you guys, obviously… Continue reading Vegan Dining in Hobart: Monsoon Thai Fusion

Three of Sydneys Best Vegan Burgers

As they say in Cornwall “Well, Burger me!”. I love a burger. A vegan burger of course. But I have been a bit fed up in the past of the same three choices: Falafal burger, lentil burger or non descript “veggie burger” which usually consists of mashed potato with peas and sweetcorn in the shape of a patty. BORING!!

Luckily Sydney is the vegan fatties dream when it comes to cruelty free burgers, and I’ve been munching my way through quite a few.

I still have a little research left to do (followed by a lot of exercise I expect…) but here are my 3 favorite vegan burgers I’ve been chomping through in Sydney: Continue reading Three of Sydneys Best Vegan Burgers

Nourishing Vegan Avocado, Lime and Coconut Face Mask

Ooops I’ve done it again. I have promised to be better at posting blogs, only to get distracted by sunny Australian beaches, lazy Game of Thrones nights and wine…Sorry!

But on the plus side, my lazy winter procrastinations (yes it is pretty cold here in Sydney) has meant that I have been testing out a vast variety of home made pamper treatments and have discovered this tropical blend.

During a long weekend break to Byron Bay with my lovely friend Kate, we binged on episodes of Lost, windy beach walks and this AMAZING avocado, lime and coconut yogurt face mask. We honestly got so addicted we indulged 3 nights in a row, and left the party beach atmosphere of Byron looking more glowing and refreshed than when we arrived! 36 Twitter Accounts That’ll Help you Live Greener

I’ll begin this post by putting my hands up and admitting I am an intermittent and inconsistent Twitter user. I have weeks when I’m completely on it and post regularly, and there are other times when I forget it even exists. Personally I see this approach to social media as healthy; it should simply be something you dip in and out of in between living life, not something you are glued to every second of the day. BUT as a blogger, I am aware that I’m missing a trick.

Twitter is an awesome way to stay on the ball with the people and topics which interest you, and can be an incredible resource to accessing advice, information and inspiration for living a little more sustainably. And its not just newsfeeds and hashtags you can follow to help your green journey. There are also heaps of weekly debates, Q&As and discussion hours – such as #makedoandmendhour and #veganhour – where you can share (or steal) great ideas and easy green hacks from other like minded tweeters.

With this in mind, I thought I would share 20 of my favourite Twitter accounts, for anyone interested in sustainability, veganism or green and ethical living.

A Lazy Guide to Buying Vegan Friendly Shoes

Being completely oblivious to the latest trends and fashions has its benefits. I spend very little money on clothes, happily avoid horrifying changing room mirrors (or at least my reflection in them) and I rarely have to upgrade my clothes and shoes unless they are literally falling apart. Win win!

I usually take the zero waste approach to clothing and either do swapsies with my friends or buy in charity and second hand stores, but every now and then I have to venture out and kit myself out with some new garments. This has been true over the last couple of months as I’ve had to transition from flip flop tie dye wearing traveller hippy, to semi professional city dweller as I settle into my new life in Sydney.

Shoes in particular have been on my mind of late and – as anyone who has ever tried to navigate the world of ethical clothing will know – there is usually the choice between stereotypical ugly clunky vegan footwear or highly bespoke, beautiful but deadly expensive clogs.

So what is the deal with footwear and vegans anyway? Whats ethical and whats not? and more importantly, where on Earth can you get some decent vegan footwear at a reasonable cost?!! Fear not my lovelies, I may have a couple of answers…

16 Fascinating Facts about Vegan & Vegetarian Living [Infographic]

A huge number of people are opting to go for vegan products these days. You can not only eat the same number of calories and still gain less weight, but it also helps you prevent some types of cancer and live longer.

While it’s a known fact that vegetarians have a lower risk of heart disease, diabetes, obesity and cancer when compared to their meat-eating counterparts, a significant amount of CO2 emissions can be reduced if more people opt to cut out meat from their diet.

Herbalift recently came out with this great infographic that compiles the amazing facts and stats about vegan and vegetarian living. Let’s have a look: Continue reading 16 Fascinating Facts about Vegan & Vegetarian Living [Infographic]

Vegan dining in Udaipur: Millets of Mewar

Udaipur, Rajathans glistening white treasure, has quickly become my favourite city in the world. It’s clean, friendly streets are scattered with quirky galleries and even quirkier people. It’s numerous cool lakes are surrounded by luscious greenery and fascinating heritage.

When you rock up in Udaipur for the very first time, you’d be mistaken for thinking you’d arrived in a remote, untouched part of Italy; were it not for the hundreds of Rajathani mirrored murals which cover it’s city walls.   Continue reading Vegan dining in Udaipur: Millets of Mewar
