Feeling Consumed by Consumerism? Discover the True Meaning of Zero Waste Living…

We have all one time or another felt the stark reality of the saying “you don’t know what you got ’til its gone”; whether it’s through loss of money, lost of belongings or loss of loved ones. But how many of us have had things taken away, only to feel a refreshing sense of relief, freedom or, perhaps more curiously, indifference?

So many of us live in a world which encourages gains not losses. Our achievements as humans are focused on progression, improvement, growth.  Naturally much of this involves the acquisition of the new. We look toward new cars, new homes, new clothes and new trendy restaurants to both renew and define us. We are literally consumed by consumerism.  Continue reading Feeling Consumed by Consumerism? Now I am here in my third year of the campaign ready to step it up for another week of learning new tricks, sharing my successes and failures, and basically having an awesome fun time kicking waste to the kirb (not literally of course!) Continue reading Zero Waste Week: My Pledge to “Use it Up”!

Antoine Repessé: Portraits of Waste Through the Eyes of a Photographer

I’ve often wondered what all my rubbish would look like if I could see it all laid out in front of me. Though I am uber conscious about throwing things in the landfill, and avoid packaging as much as I can, I am far from the girl who can store her waste in a jar!

But perhaps if we couldn’t hide from the waste we produced, and had to live surrounded by it instead, we could see just how much we still need to cut down on.

This is something which has been beautifully presented by Lille-based photographer Antoine Repessé  in his latest project; #365 Unpacked. In 2011, Repessé stopped throwing away his recyclable rubbish and instead began storing it inside his home for this fascinating photography project. To date he has 70m3 of waste stored!  Continue reading Antoine Repessé: Portraits of Waste Through the Eyes of a Photographer

Newtown’s Naked Foods Organic Bulk Store

It’s well documented that I love a good rant about the pointless amount of packaging that is sent home with us with almost everything we buy. From the familiar plastic bags full of salad, apples or seeds to the ridiculous cellophane wrapped broccoli or bananas; packaging represents a huge majority of what we collect in our shopping trolleys. But in most modern supermarkets, or indeed local health or farm shops, packaging is an unavoidable side effect of being a consumer and it has catastrophic implications for our planet.

This is why I am such a huge fan of wholefood stores which allow you to bring your own reusable container and scoop up exactly how much you want straight from the source. Not only do they save on packaging, they also help to reduce food waste as you can take away exactly how much you need; rather than buying 2 kilo bag of linseed which will sit in the back of your cupboard for 6 months before you have to throw it away because you didn’t seal the plastic bag  and they now smell weird…! If I need 4 cashews for a recipe, I can just pop in and scoop ’em up. No worries! Continue reading Newtown’s Naked Foods Organic Bulk Store

Tackling Food Waste: Can the Aussies Catch up with France?

Greetings from Sydney! I have been living as a fully fledged Aussie for over a month now and I’m completely in love with my new summery, outdoorsy life. The weather is sweet, the city is full of gorgeous wildlife, and the vegan options are to die for! But one thing I’ve noticed since I’ve been back in Western Civilization is the insane amount of consumerism in the city, especially when it comes to excess grocery shopping.

We are all vaguely aware that food wastage is a big problem (as much as 50% of all food produced – or two billion tonnes – each year), and that much of that is wasted in the supermarket before it even reaches our homes. Here in Australia alone, as much as 44 million tonnes of food is wasted annually! Meanwhile, elsewhere in the world over one billion people experience fatal hunger and malnutrition. Something clearly needs to change, and fast!

Did you have a Short Fuse for electrical waste?

Tired, grumpy and uncommunicative after a long and dreary day, my boyfriend Toby and I sat in my flat and decided to watch something on his laptop. Flashing in the corner of the screen, an icon told us the battery was low and needed to be connected to a charger.

Reluctantly we tag teamed to get the charger attached from our seats: Toby passing the wire toward me, and I fulfilling my role to plug it into a power socket. A simple enough routine, which felt  like the world’s most energy sucking task when all you want to do is watch crap TV.

However, our efforts were met with disappointing resistance, when the battery icon continued to flash its warning. The charger was not working. We tested out the socket. Fine. We checked the connection. Fine. The laptop charger was caput. Yet another electrical item that’s met its demise and is ready to go to the landfill.

But hey ho, luckily we had a spare and our evening viewing could continue, uninterrupted.
