Toilet roll. The essential item on our shopping lists, and one of the only things we spent hundreds of pounds on a year, only to intentionally throw it away! We use it several times a day – more often if you’re a vegan, lets face it – and an empty loo roll holder instills a frantic panic amongst the best of us, leading to a feeble cry of helplessness: “what do I use now?!” It’s an underrated champion for something so simple, yet most of feel that we couldn’t live without it!
And it’s not just our delicate regions which require the trusty toilet roll. From blowing noses, wiping dirty children faces and removing last nights make up, to using it in lieu of kitchen roll (yes, hands up, I have been known to do that!) it’s estimated that an average person uses at least 30 rolls (or approx 39 lbs) of toilet roll every year. We have all one time or another felt the stark reality of the saying “you don’t know what you got ’til its gone”; whether it’s through loss of money, lost of belongings or loss of loved ones. But how many of us have had things taken away, only to feel a refreshing sense of relief, freedom or, perhaps more curiously, indifference?
So many of us live in a world which encourages gains not losses. Our achievements as humans are focused on progression, improvement, growth. Naturally much of this involves the acquisition of the new. We look toward new cars, new homes, new clothes and new trendy restaurants to both renew and define us. Well my lovely green beans its now officially a month to go until Zero Waste Week! That can only mean one thing: a full week packed full of nifty tips and advice on how to cut wastage at home, as well as confessional stories from me attempting to cut down on consumerism ,and thinking out side of the box for zero waste solutions.

Aloha! Just a quick check in from me as I chill by the beach in Santa Monica after arriving in sunny California today! It is such a nice treat to be warm again after my chilly Tasmania trip and the last few days in wintery Christchurch, New Zealand.
More blogs and stories to come from my travels, but I just wanted to jump in quickly and tell you about a lovely surprise mention of A lazy Girl Goes Green in Country Home and Interiors Magazine. The fabulous mag, which features dream country homes that many of us can only dream of recreating, has gone all green in this months edition and, as well as yours truly, has featured a mention for my fellow green bloggers Moral Fibres and Curiously Conscious.
It’s an honour to feature beside such seasoned bloggers when I know I regularly live up to my lazy name and am not the most organised blogger! But being described as one of the top three “style-savvy green thinking bloggers” who “…shares humorous and relatable tales of trying to live sustainably…” encourages me to think this little blog of mine still has some use to others!
Bees are synonymous with the perfect English summer’s day. Any portrait of rural Britain would be incomplete without our plump and furry little friends, but what many don’t know is that these small little insects that works so tirelessly and quietly around us, have played a vital role in the development of the human race.
Without them it’s unlikely that flowers would have evolved their diverse and alluring colouration, and they’re responsible for pollinating a staggering 70% of the food we eat in Britain. Their existence has helped feed both our soul and stomach, and without them agriculture as we know it would collapse.
Alarming statistics from Friends of the Earth suggest that over recent years the British Bee population has declined by a third since 2007, and in the 1950’s there were over 50 native species of bee in the UK, yet now there are just 25. Continue reading How to Garden for Bees
I’ve often wondered what all my rubbish would look like if I could see it all laid out in front of me. Though I am uber conscious about throwing things in the landfill, and avoid packaging as much as I can, I am far from the girl who can store her waste in a jar!
But perhaps if we couldn’t hide from the waste we produced, and had to live surrounded by it instead, we could see just how much we still need to cut down on.
This is something which has been beautifully presented by Lille-based photographer Antoine Repessé in his latest project; #365 Unpacked. In 2011, Repessé stopped throwing away his recyclable rubbish and instead began storing it inside his home for this fascinating photography project. To date he has 70m3 of waste stored!
