5 Ways to reuse Easter Egg Plastic Packaging

You did it again didn’t you?

Despite scorning yourself last Easter for not searching out chocolate eggs with eco friendly packaging, you still have a house full of egg shaped plastic moulds lying around the house.

It’s OK. We all do it some time in our lives, and have shared that moment of sheepish guilt as we throw them into the bin come Easter Monday.

Its the kind of guilt we hang our chocolatey faced head down in shame for. Because we all know, no matter how much we love a regular bar of chocolate – which has simply been moulded into an egg for no particular reason – plastic packaging is a HUGE problem and we really need to stop contributing to it.

But don’t you worry. I made this massive error this year myself, and got super excited with a certain brand of Vegan chocolate eggs (no naming or shaming!); overlooking the plastic mould it came in. So…I thought fast on my feet to came up with a few semi useful reuses for said plastic, so that I could avoid Easter weekend sadness when I was so happily on a chocolate sugar high:

Plastic Bottle Fashion

Along with my purse, phone and keys, I carry my bobble water bottle wherever I go. It’s not necessarily that I’m a big water drinker (in fact, sometimes I can go all day without drinking any at all) but I never want to be caught short and forced to buy bottled water from the shop. Ever since I discovered more about the devastating effects of plastic pollution,  the idea of buying water bottled when its readily available in taps makes no sense to me.

That said, we all get caught out once in a while, and the fact is that billions of plastic bottles continue to be produced worldwide. But what if these bottles could be recycled, and re-appropriated into something useful? Well I recently came across a company who is trying to salvage our plastic bottles, and turn them into things we can wear and use; and a lot of big brands are in on it.

Understanding: Plastic Pollution

This month, thousands of people across the world are taking part in the fourth year of Australian born awareness campaign: Plastic Free July. Aiming to raise global awareness of just how much we reply on plastic, their challenge is simple: refuse single-use plastic for one whole month.

But simple in theory is not always simple in practice; and I have watched in awe over the last few weeks as people think creatively and resourcefully to dodge those pesky plastics! One of my favourite fellow bloggers, Westywrites, has been sharing her plastic free progress; from buying bag-less tea (yes, even they contain plastic!) and bottle-less shampoo, to sending twitter questions to the companies who produce plastic laden products. But as I’ve seen for many plastic free heroes, it’s a tough old slog and can feel like a never ending battle. Plastic is literally everywhere!

But this got me thinking. Just how critical has plastic pollution become, and what can be done to rectify the devastation it’s causing? I learnt a little about plastic bottles when I switched to my reusable water bottle, but I have a feeling its a little more complex than that. Cue some Lazy Green Girl research… Continue reading Understanding: Plastic Pollution
