Feeling Consumed by Consumerism? Discover the True Meaning of Zero Waste Living…

We have all one time or another felt the stark reality of the saying “you don’t know what you got ’til its gone”; whether it’s through loss of money, lost of belongings or loss of loved ones. But how many of us have had things taken away, only to feel a refreshing sense of relief, freedom or, perhaps more curiously, indifference?

So many of us live in a world which encourages gains not losses. Our achievements as humans are focused on progression, improvement, growth.  Naturally much of this involves the acquisition of the new. We look toward new cars, new homes, new clothes and new trendy restaurants to both renew and define us. We are literally consumed by consumerism.  Continue reading Feeling Consumed by Consumerism? What to Put in Your Zero Waste Foodie kit

Well my lovely green beans its now officially a month to go until Zero Waste Week! That can only mean one thing: a full week packed full of nifty tips and advice on how to cut wastage at home, as well as confessional stories from me attempting to cut down on consumerism ,and thinking out side of the box for zero waste solutions.

Last month I ran a Zero Waste competition in anticipation of the week, with  a BRITA Fill & Serve, and 3 BRITA Fill & Go’s up for grabs for anyone who could give me three of their favourite tools for a zero waste foodie kit.  Continue reading What to Put in Your Zero Waste Foodie kit

Zero Waste Week: My Pledge to “Use it Up”!

How the years fly by when you are busy having fun and living zero waste!

It only feels like yesterday I joined the jaw-droppingly inspiring Zero Waste Blog Ambassadors (and the beautiful brains of Rachelle Strauss) on the Zero Waste Week Campaign back in 2014. (Catch up on the last two years HERE.)

Now I am here in my third year of the campaign ready to step it up for another week of learning new tricks, sharing my successes and failures, and basically having an awesome fun time kicking waste to the kirb (not literally of course!) Continue reading Zero Waste Week: My Pledge to “Use it Up”!

Easy T Shirt Hacks for the Lazy Seamstress

I can’t believe its already day 5 of Zero Waste Week and what a week it’s been!! I must admit, I’ve been a terrible blogger and been so knee deep in my last week of work and packing to move house, that I haven’t had much time to blog!

But it’s not all been zero waste naughtiness over here, and I’ve been having lots of fun passing all my unwanted belongings on to friends, and on sites like Gumtree and Streetbank.

However, some items – especially clothes and small reusable containers – are actually easily upcycled with a few very easy tweeks, to breathe new life into them. So, though I have been looking at things as I pack thinking “will I miss it in the year I’m away, or should I part with it now?” I’ve also found myself asking “could I use this in someway in my backpack?” It’s a travel hoarders dream!!!

My very good friend Emily recently inspired me with the idea of T Shirt Hacks; quick and easy fashion updates which don’t involve a thread or a needle. My idea of upcycing heaven! This is perfect for making the clothes I’ve been wearing all summer in the UK, new and exciting for my summery days on the road!

I had a little dig to find some examples of how Emilys hacks works in reality before I braved a pair of scissors to my clothes on my 2 weeks off before my flight, and it appears there are 100s of ways you can update a simple T shirt with no sewing skills whatsoever! Here’s just three of them:

Packing solutions for the Green traveler

Well my lovelies, Zero waste Week is here and has already gone off with a big bang!! Some of my fellow zero waste bloggers have already shared some fabulous tips, ideas and confessions for cutting down the waste, and the activity on social media was so electric yesterday, #zerowasteweek was even trending on Twitter!!

But this week is also big for another very exciting reason: it’s my last week working at the amazing Eden Project before I pack up all my things and move back to my parents home. In less than 3 weeks I’ll be off on my round the world trip!!

After months of successful planning and not so successful saving, I’ll soon be heading off on foot with just a 46L backpack and leaving all my worldly belongings behind.

This kind of life change calls for a MASSIVE clear out, so Zero Waste Week couldn’t come at a better time! Continue reading Packing solutions for the Green traveler

Zero Waste Week 2015 – My pledge to Reuse

It’s that time of year again, when summer has reached its peak, Autumn seems just around the corner AND…it’s nearly time for Zero Waste Week!

For those of you who have been hiding behind your bins bags for the last 8 years (naughty, naughty!) Zero Waste Week is an awesome campaign to get us reducing our waste for just one week a year, in a bid to set us up with some money saving, and planet saving, habits.

This year the week will be running between 7th – 13th September, and the theme this time is one of my favourite pastimes: ‘Reuse’. What better way to be green than to save on resources and make the most of what you’ve already got?! All you need to do is sign up and pledge just one thing you plan to tackle during the week in the name of Zero Waste! Your Green Life: Zero Waste Week

I must admit, I’ve been dying to get in the head of Rachelle Strauss ever since I came across her genius on Twitter a few months ago. This lady, with endless enthusiasm and zero waste knowledge, was an early inspiration to me when I started A Lazy Girl Goes Green. With years of experience of running awareness campaigns, and an army of committed bloggers at her side (me being one of them this year) this chick knows her stuff!

That day has finally arrived, where we all get to hear from Rachelle on her inspiration, lazy green tips and why we all need to keep a Native American principle in mind… Continue reading Your Green Life: Zero Waste Week

Zero Waste Week Day 7: Not the End of My Journey

It’s the final day of a fantastic week, of going completely zero waste, and what a journey it has been! I’ve learnt so much about the many uses for fruit and vegetable scraps, and have successfully kept every last bit of my food from going into the bin. A big thank you to everyone who got involved in Zero Waste Week this year, not only for keeping me motivated in continuing my own pledge, but also for the contribution you’ve made to tackling waste as a whole. Even the smallest attempt you make to cut waste is a success for us all 🙂 Continue reading Zero Waste Week Day 7: Not the End of My Journey
