Dear Cafe Rouge
I’m sure you will agree that the festive season leading up to Christmas day is a time for family, friends, fun and feasting – something I imagine you hope to host in your national chain of French cuisine restaurants.
Having had a large majority of my family live in the South West of France for the last 29 years – and thus spending the large majority of my childhood holidays there – I am very partial to the French style of eating and its focus on rich, decadent flavours. Hearty bean cassoulet, warming onion soup and wine drenched mushroom bourguignon are some of my favourites; all washed down with a glass of classic Bordeaux.

It’s well documented that I love a good rant about the pointless amount of packaging that is sent home with us with almost everything we buy. From the familiar plastic bags full of salad, apples or seeds to the ridiculous cellophane wrapped broccoli or bananas; packaging represents a huge majority of what we collect in our shopping trolleys. But in most modern supermarkets, or indeed local health or farm shops, packaging is an unavoidable side effect of being a consumer and it has catastrophic implications for our planet.
This is why I am such a huge fan of wholefood stores which allow you to bring your own reusable container and scoop up exactly how much you want straight from the source. Not only do they save on packaging, they also help to reduce food waste as you can take away exactly how much you need; rather than buying 2 kilo bag of linseed which will sit in the back of your cupboard for 6 months before you have to throw it away because you didn’t seal the plastic bag and they now smell weird…! Udaipur, Rajathans glistening white treasure, has quickly become my favourite city in the world. It’s clean, friendly streets are scattered with quirky galleries and even quirkier people. It’s numerous cool lakes are surrounded by luscious greenery and fascinating heritage.

Haggis, tatties and shortbread are the things which usually spring to mind when you think of traditional Scottish cuisine. Warming, hearty and full of meat and dairy.
However, on a recent trip up to the youthful port city of Glasgow, I discovered that our Northern neighbours were in fact brooding a rather exciting culture of vegan dining; and I simply had to get my teeth around some of it!
Though the whole city is awash with vegan friendly hangouts, and easily adaptable menus, here are my top 5 favourite places to stop by:
Sometimes, I wonder if I’m the only person in the world who can’t seem to get into Green Tea. And believe me, I’ve tried. I’ve tried a plethora of Green tea “infusions”, and played around with different brands. I’ve even experimented patiently with varying levels of strength, watching intently as though the dipping of a tea bag is a delicate, ground-breaking scientific experiment. But in the same way that I just can’t get into funk music – despite some of my best friends insisting upon its greatness – Green Tea and I just can’t seem to find a middle ground.
However, shamelessly intrigued by health trends and Instragram food porn images (this is far more innocent than it sounds, I promise), I’ve been dying to see if the increasingly popular Matcha Green Tea could convert me to the green side!
