Sometimes, I wonder if I’m the only person in the world who can’t seem to get into Green Tea. And believe me, I’ve tried. I’ve tried a plethora of Green tea “infusions”, and played around with different brands. I’ve even experimented patiently with varying levels of strength, watching intently as though the dipping of a tea bag is a delicate, ground-breaking scientific experiment. But in the same way that I just can’t get into funk music – despite some of my best friends insisting upon its greatness – Green Tea and I just can’t seem to find a middle ground.
However, shamelessly intrigued by health trends and Instragram food porn images (this is far more innocent than it sounds, I promise), I’ve been dying to see if the increasingly popular Matcha Green Tea could convert me to the green side! My chance to get en- vogue in the tea world came recently, when I got my hands on a sample of OMGTEA Matcha tea powder.
The reason, it seems, that Matcha Green Tea – which is essentially pure, ground green tea – is creating such a buzz, is due to its impressive antioxidant credentials compared to other known sources. It is said that 1 tsp of Matcha tea has:
- 17x the antioxidants of Blueberries,
- 60x more than spinach,
- And 137x more regular green tea!
In addition, this punchy green powder apparently burns calories, increases energy levels, lowers cholesterol and regulates blood sugar levels; all this whilst soothing and relaxing your mind! I can see why people love it so much!! OMGTEA (Organic Matcha Green Tea) offers an especially high level of this green goodness; surpassing all natural antioxidant rich food known so far!
There are two things that strike me about this powder, as a green tea dodger: 1) I don’t need to drink as much to get the benefits associated with the beverage, and 2) as its in powder form I don’t have to drink it at all! The fact that I can squirrel it away as a hidden ingredient is super appealing. Now I know why there’s been a rise in Matcha Green Tea flavoured ice creams and cakes; it gets people like me consuming the stuff!!
So what do you do when you get your hands on some of this magic powder? The most classic way is to drink a Matcha Green Tea Latte; a warm, milky, sweet latte with a green tea kick. For this, you simply place 1/2 tsp of Matcha into a mug, and add a few drops of boiling water to melt the tea into a paste. After the tea is melted, fill with hot almond milk and a tea spoon of agave syrup and whisk until frothy & smooth. It’s a mixture between a Horlicks and a chai latte, and I could drink them all damn day!!
But now that I’ve opened my mind and heart to green tea, I want to experiment a bit further. The OMGTEA Matcha tea powder sample (which is just £1.99) goes a long way, so I have by far enough to try a few recipes out. I’m yet to notice a visible increase in energy and wellbeing, but for now I’m happily content with the fact I’ve mastered my distaste for the healthy green stuff!
