Making up is hard to do when your choices are mostly chemical. Now you can make your own sweet sweet homemade mascara from natural ingredients thanks to this easy recipe from our new book, Greenmoxie’s Field Guide to Green Living. You can engage in some splendid beauty alchemy with things you probably already have in your kitchen.
What you need:
- 1 tsp coconut oil
- 1 1/2 tsp beeswax (or more shea butter for vegans!)
- 1 tsp shea butter
- 4 tsp of aloe vera gel
- 1-2 capsules of activated charcoal (find this at your health food store)
Method:
Place the coconut oil, beeswax shea and aloe vera in a small pot. Warm over a very low heat until completely melted. Remove from heat and add the charcoal. Stir really well. When its cool enough, pour it into a mascara tube using a funnel. If you don’t have a funnel, pour it into a plastic bag and then cut a small hole in one corner and use the bag to get it into the mascara tube.
Voila! Your very own easy peasy DIY homemade natural mascara.
If you are using a new or used mascara tube, make sure that it has been well sterilized.

I don’t actually use mascara – haven’t done since I started wearing spectacles – but if I did, I would try this out.
