Last night my spirits were lifted by not one, but three, heart warming and belly loving treats: a night at a comedy show, a chance to support an amazing cause close to my heart, and a delicious Vegan South Indian feast. Proof that Monday’s aren’t always evil!
Stand Up for Animals was a jam packed night at the Comedy Store in London, in aid of the fantastic animal protection charity Humane Society International. The line-up included awesome comedians Alistair Barrie, Aisling Bea, Rob Deering, Alasdair Beckett-King and Stewart Francis to name just a few. I’ll be honest with you, I’m feeling pretty blue right now. And it’s not just an average case of autumnal lethargic disengagement. I am sleeping badly, eating badly and watching bad TV. I’m even struggling to find the motivation to move from the sofa to make myself a cup of tea. I haven’t been writing, have barely exercised, and have gotten a little too aquatinted with packet noodles for my liking. Things are bad.
This situation is familiar to us all, and completely expected. Whether you’ve just returned from an epic holiday back to reality (check), in-between jobs (check), frantically house hunting (check) or simply getting used to the colder season (check); the blues are a natural way our bodies and minds tell us we need to slow down, acclimatise to our surroundings, and give ourselves lots of love and TLC.

Toilet roll. The essential item on our shopping lists, and one of the only things we spent hundreds of pounds on a year, only to intentionally throw it away! We use it several times a day – more often if you’re a vegan, lets face it – and an empty loo roll holder instills a frantic panic amongst the best of us, leading to a feeble cry of helplessness: “what do I use now?!” It’s an underrated champion for something so simple, yet most of feel that we couldn’t live without it!
And it’s not just our delicate regions which require the trusty toilet roll. From blowing noses, wiping dirty children faces and removing last nights make up, to using it in lieu of kitchen roll (yes, hands up, I have been known to do that!) it’s estimated that an average person uses at least 30 rolls (or approx 39 lbs) of toilet roll every year. Having spent the last couple of weeks wading through the boxes I stored whilst travelling, I came across a very special box the other day which filled me with instant happiness: the parcel I sent to myself from India. Due to a limited budget, I had selected only a few small items to purchase and send home.

We have all one time or another felt the stark reality of the saying “you don’t know what you got ’til its gone”; whether it’s through loss of money, lost of belongings or loss of loved ones. But how many of us have had things taken away, only to feel a refreshing sense of relief, freedom or, perhaps more curiously, indifference?
So many of us live in a world which encourages gains not losses. Our achievements as humans are focused on progression, improvement, growth. Naturally much of this involves the acquisition of the new. We look toward new cars, new homes, new clothes and new trendy restaurants to both renew and define us. I’m back in the UK! 322 days after setting off for a trip of a lifetime I am back to sunny (ish) Devon for some RnR with the family before I let my grown up self kick into action and start to create some kind of new reality.
Over the last 11 or so months I have crossed through 9 countries, climbed 6 mountains, explored over 50 cities and towns, swan numerous oceans, flown in a helicopter, trekked through woodlands, creeks, deserts and meadows, drank LOTS of wine, and met some of the most incredible, lifelong friends I could ever have dreamt of.
