10 Ethical Brands Owned by Big Corporations

When going green, an obvious first step for many is trying to buy more ethical products; from organic veg and natural soap, to shampoos and cleaning products which haven’t been tested on animals. That’s why one of the first blogs I wrote, when trying to live more sustainably, was all about Understanding Ethical Labels and how you can work out what’s green or not.

But more and more, small ethical brands, which use these labels, are being bought by big corporations who, – through other brands and products – may often be considered the antithesis of ethical. Primarily focused on profit and expansion; these large corporations often use unsustainable practices, produce genetically modified products, test on animals and generally seek to compete with smaller, family run companies. It seems that as big brands become less desirable than the natural, organic or ethical companies; they are investing in them to reap the benefits of the booming green industry. Big corporations are really beginning to have a monopoly on everything we buy… Continue reading 10 Ethical Brands Owned by Big Corporations

How The Sharing Economy Can Save Your Summer

Buying locally, buying organic and buying natural; all things I’ve started to master over the last few months of my “going green” journey. Whether it’s switching to eco beauty products, or spending my pennies on locally grown veggies; I slowly feel like I’m getting to grips with what it means to “buy sustainably”. But buying less – or nothing at all – well…I still have a little way to go on that one!

But there’s one thing that’s been popping up almost everywhere recently; reminding us that we can easily change the way we consume, use and discard everyday items, skills and services. It’s being called the sharing economy…and its saving us time, money and – in essence – our planet. Continue reading How The Sharing Economy Can Save Your Summer

Green Consumer: Eco yoga mats

This week we had friends staying with their gorgeous beagle pup, much to the dismay of our two cats!! Wonderfully friendly and generally well behaved, we didn’t think twice to leave him behind for the evening while we soaked up the Pixies at the Eden sessions (who were amazing by the way!) Unfortunately, poor old pups wasn’t so keen on chilling at home alone, and had a little moshing session of his own with one of our old yoga mats. As any pet owner will know, these things happen (you should see what my cats get up to!); and we weren’t precious about the mat.

But this did get me thinking about buying a new yoga mat, and I have been particularly keen to explore the world of green, or eco, yoga mats for a while now. But what makes a yoga mat eco? I looked at 5 of the top green yoga mats to find out…. Continue reading Green Consumer: Eco yoga mats

The Lazy Environmentalist: Too Busy to be Green?

I knew it would happen at some point, and I must admit I’ve been anticipating this moment since I started A Lazy Girl Goes Green, just over 3 months ago. But I guess if I’m honest, I think I secretly hoped that my passion, enthusiasm and stubbornness would win over circumstance. But at some point this week – despite my best intentions – I reached the reluctant realisation that I have just been far too busy to actively be green; let alone write about it! As each day passed me by so quickly, without my permission to proceed to the next, I’ve found myself reaching the weekend with only one blog written this week, and very little to report!

Lazy Movie Day….10 Must See Green Documentaries

Its Glastonbury weekend and instead of being stuck in the rain, squelching through mud and nursing a rather nasty hangover; I’m stuck indoors feeling bored and restless….nursing a rather nasty hangover! Sometimes the only thing you can do when its rainy outside, and you are lacking the motivation or energy to do something, is to have a movie day; curled up on the sofa with blankets and a selection of snacks (healthy of course… 😛 ).

But before you crack open your cringey chick flicks or addictive box sets, it might be worth considering swapping movies for some green documentaries. Not only do you get the guilty pleasure of sitting around all day watching TV, but it kind of feels a little less lazy because you are educating yourself too!

Understanding: Palm Oil

In an interview with the Ecologist last week, one of my favourite green cleaning brands, Ecover, revealed their use of algal oil (a synthetic biology oil) in replacement of palm oil. This sparked my curiosity. Why would a company who pride themselves on using “plant and mineral based ingredients…without those chemical nasties” switch from naturally grown Palm oil to a genetically modified organism (GMO) ingredient? We have all heard of the issues surrounding palm oil, but is it really that bad?

So I did a little bit of digging (lazy girl style) to get to the bottom of this natural, but controversial oil; and made a few discoveries of my own very close to home… Continue reading Understanding: Palm Oil

Week off: Reconnecting with nature & myself

Oh, what a difference a week off makes! As I sit here now, with a glass of wine in my hand and a cat on my lap, I feel happy, refreshed and energised; after a week off work to do nothing but feed my soul. The start of June marked the end of another campaign year at work, the completion of year 5 of my part-time History degree, and an eventful month 2 of my new blogging journey! It has been a fun few months, but boy have they been busy!! So to take a week off just for myself – to lie in, surf, sunbathe, practice yoga, read…or simply just to be – has been a complete blessing.
