Technology Is Secretly Making Us Greener

Manufacturers are making it easier than ever for environmentally conscious consumers to live a greener life and they’re doing in it such a way we don’t have to make big sacrifices or shun cutting-edge technology.

Smart technology is turning the everyday, mundane, energy hungry appliance into cost effective and eco-friendly must haves. In 2012 LG unveiled an entire line of smart appliances including a diet tracking refrigerator and an eco-friendly washing machine with a bigger drum and ultra-fast cycles and in the three years since then every appliance manufacturer has followed suit including self-diagnosing washing machines designed to cut down on costly call-outs for easily fixed problems. How to survive as a Vegan in India

Vivacious colours, exotic animals and ancient temples were all things which sprung to mind when I imagined my 6 week trip to India. But there was one thing in particular that had me desperate to cross oceans and land to experience: the food!

Indian cuisine has long been a firm favourite on my dinner plate, and I’m guilty of adding a “curried twist” to almost everything I cook. The prospect of eating authentic Indian food, and trying out regional varieties, was like a dream come true.

The cruel case of the Jaisalmer Camel

Silhouetted against a backdrop of rolling golden mountains of sand and a deep orange sunset, a dozen camels stroll just a few metres in front of me. The distant smell of rich spices catch my nose and the fading heat of the day gives way to a cool desert breeze.

But this isn’t the relaxing Indian sunset dreams are made of, surrounded by hundreds of tourists as I sit fighting back tears for the wheezing camels who are overworked and tired. This is the popular Sam sand Dunes in Jaisalmer, and it’s left nothing but a bitter taste in my mouth.

A Backpackers Fears: Preparing to Let Go

What a difference a week can make. Especially when you feel like you’ve been moving at 100 Mph for the last 6 months, on an unsatisfying energy source of cheap coffee, hummus and Sex and the City reruns! Life for the first half of 2015 has seemed to move both mind numbingly slow and overwhelmingly fast in equal measures.

On the one hand, I’ve impatiently anticipated the day I finally fly the UK nest and take my lazy green ways on the road trip of a lifetime. The days have dragged as I’ve lived as frugally as possible to save for my dream one year trip around the globe.

On the other hand, days have seemed to blur into weeks faster than the TGV, and I’m left with just 9 days to go before I fly (and an ever escalating to do list!)

I know, I know, it’s hard to feel sorry for someone who has quit their job and is about to embark on a year of galavanting around the world! But there is unfortunately no calm before the backpackers storm, and it seems that the most stressful part of a round the world trip is the preparation period itself, where your whole being has a last minute freak out, and yells: “what the hell are you doing?! Lets just run back to where we came from and hide under a rock where it feels safe!” Continue reading A Backpackers Fears: Preparing to Let Go

Vegan Life: Issue 8 Review

When, late last year, the introduction of a new vegan specific lifestyle magazine – Vegan Life – was announced, I think more than a few people cried a big veggie hooray! But little did I know that this monthly magazine would become such an important part of my plant based lifestyle, in more ways than one.

Mixing delicious vegan recipes, restaurant reviews and beauty product spotlights, as well as fantastic interviews and news from around the world, Vegan Life is fast becoming an invaluable source for connecting vegans with goings on around the world. Not to mention helping us to feel part of a passionate and diverse community.

In short, Vegan Life makes vegan living sexy, accessible and fun to be part of.

Five essentials for a lazy green beach bag

Summer is slowly but surely coming to a close and, here in Cornwall, I’ve noticed an influx of last minute beach goers desperate to enjoy the last few weeks of the summer sun.

Even woodland fairies like me – who prefer a welly-booted walk through an enchanted forest – like the occasional day at the beach to soak up some sun, sea and sand. But before running toward the coast with our beach bags full to the brim, here’s my five essentials for a lazy green beach bag:

Zero Waste Tools for Foodies on the Go

Ola my lazy green lovelies! I just wanted to check in and share some zero waste gear I’ve recently purchased for drinking and eating on the go. These two nifty things will keep me avoiding single use plastic containers both at home, and on the road when travelling, and are fast joining my handbag essentials, along with my phone and purse.

You may recall in one of my first ever posts that I have a very irrational distaste for tap water. So much so that I literally can’t drink water unless it has been filtered or come straight from a spring. A bit of a Princess, I know, but I just can’t get used to the taste! As such, I’ve been carrying my trusty Bobble water bottle with me for the last year or so. Continue reading Zero Waste Tools for Foodies on the Go

How to remedy the environmental disaster that is Planned Obsolescence

We’ve all, at some time or another, rolled our eyes at our elders as they claim in dismay that “things just aren’t made to last the way they used to”. Clutching on to the same moth ridden coat they’ve worn since the 40s, or fervently plodding down the road at 20mph in their trusty Morris minors; our grandparents are the kings and queens of frugal living. Their dusty and unchanging homes are living museums of the “golden Years”; where purchases were made for longevity, and are generously cared for as though they were the last of their kind left on Earth.
