Your Green Life: Green Moxie

I’ve just returned from a week away exploring Edinburgh, Glasgow and Dartmoor with some of my best friends; and am now snuggled at home feeling well rested and full of happiness. Just a little time away have given me a much needed winter boost and filled me with fresh energy for December.

This new lease of life is very apt, as this weeks interview is with a woman whose energy and passion for sustainability was a big inspiration to starting A Lazy Girl Goes Green earlier this year. Nikki Fotheringham – the brain child behind Toronto based green living website Green Moxie – is always full of fun and quirky ideas for upcycing and beauty DIY (like this awesome natural eyeshadow) which would make anyone want to reach for the glue gun. I wanted to pick her creative brain, and find out what inspires her across the Atlantic.

Lazy Vegan Recipe: Spiced Mandarin Chocolate & Seed Thins

Om nom nom nom……..that’s the best introduction I can give to these delicious little bites of loveliness!

I created this recipe when I had a particularly strong chocolate craving late on Saturday evening and only had drinking chocolate flakes in the house. “Fear not!” I told myself; this wasn’t any old drinking chocolate, this was Eden Project Spice Mandarin Drinking Chocolate, which was in fact real life cocoa solids. Perfect for melting into something tasty.

I just mixed up the melted chocolate and coconut oil with whatever nuts and seeds were lying around, but it’s so quick and easy you could experiment further by adding pieces of candied orange peel, currents or ginger. Anything to add an even more festive feel.

So when everyone is reaching for the quality streets at Christmas, I’ll have my very own vegan treat up my sleeve!

Make your own ‘living’ table centrepiece

‘Tis the season to sit around the table and share food with loved ones. The one thing about Christmas I can’t be a Grinch about! I love seeing everyone sat around the table, with our personalised napkins (that my mum lovingly sewed for us), and a few candles lighting our smiling faces. We all have our own table traditions; from our “special” cutlery to how we dress it to look pretty.

I love the idea of a big center piece on a dinner table to mark a special occasion, but have always been reluctant to buy anything (and am never creative enough to design something myself) .

But recently my friend Dee at ItDoesTheJob.com told me about their ‘waste free’ living table centerpiece, following one of their successful sustainable suppers. I loved the idea so much I asked if they could share some simple steps to how someone lazy or not very creative could make such a masterpiece.  Continue reading Make your own ‘living’ table centrepiece

Your Green Life: Free Range Learning

As the late Whitney Houson once sang “I believe that children are our future….” and I have to say that I agree with her whole heartedly .

It’s taken me nearly 30 years to pay less attention to what advertising tells me I want, and more attention to the bigger picture of what I (and the planet) actually need. But what if everyone learnt these values from an early age? What if learning about animals, growing food, and how we all have a chance to make the world a better place was something kids got to explore in a fun and interactive way?

Well that’s just what Hannah, founder of Free Range Learning, is setting out to do. I first came across her work a couple of years ago when she got involved in a free workshop event I organised in Cardiff (with the help of the awesome Green City Events), and was impressed by her enthusiasm, passion and all round fun approach to inspiring children to live happy, healthy and sustainably!

You can watch the video from that event below:

Here’s what Hannah had to say about the work she does, and why she seems to accumulate sacks of empty toilet rolls….

Your Green Life: Lucy Bee

Over the last few weeks – whilst hearing what green living means to a whole variety of people – I have noticed a recurring theme. Whilst inspiration for living more sustainably ranges from  animal ethics, environmental concern and existing family values; everyone seems to agree there are real health and well being benefits too.

Many believe that eating fresh, seasonal and organic food is not only supporting good farming practices; but also keeps our bodies sustainable too.  And often these first steps of thinking about what you buy and consume in the food aisle, starts to influence other shopping habits too.

This motivation for a healthier, happier body is something this weeks interviewee – the founder of Lucy Be Coconut Oil – is very passionate about, and she’s an aspiring example of how eating fresh, organic food can be one of the best medicines around! Continue reading Your Green Life: Lucy Bee

Your Green Life: Tess Riley

When I first made a conscious effort to “go green” earlier this year, I knew I’d be travelling down a liberating road of knowledge and discoveries surrounding the world of sustainability. I was already aware of recycling, organic food and chemical free beauty products; but I knew there was more to it than that.

So when I started this blog, a big part of sharing my green living experiences was delving in deeper – with my “Understanding” posts – to get to grips with the basics of sustainability issues; from understanding biodiversity, plastic waste and palm oil rain forest destruction, to the ethics of the industrialised dairy farming. It’s one thing to live green, but it’s another to try understand why it’s so important .

This weeks Your Green Life interviewee has inspired me endlessly throughout my quest to understand these issues; and is someone who not only asks thought provoking questions (and presents well informed and reasoned answers as a result), but she puts her money where her mouth is and actively campaigns for positive change. For this reason alone, she represents my ambitions for the future of my green journey; where action can speak louder than words.  Continue reading Your Green Life: Tess Riley
