Your Green Life: Freya Grummitt (Project Dirt)

One thing that’s struck me most recently about sustainability, is that it’s not just about our dependence on the planet, but our connections with each other, that is so important to protect. It doesn’t matter how much recycling we do at home, or how many less things we buy; it is pretty clear that powerful changes really happy when we work together to share passions, ideas and resources.

There are already heaps of groups, organisations and companies doing awesome things out there, transforming people and places; but it’s a bit of a forest out there! Sometimes it can be hard to get our voices heard, and share the success (and not so….) stories which remind us why we are a productive and creative species, who can actually change the world for good.

This is why I wanted to pick the brains of someone who is at the heart of a thriving community of ‘doers’, and helps to get conversations around positive change flowing. Project Dirt is a social media site for community projects and groups who want to chat with like minded passionate people. and collaborate to share resources and ideas. From gardening groups, and Big Lunchers, to transition towns and community organisers; it’s like a little hub of positive goings on! I chatted to the lovely Freya from PD to find out what lies behind her passions for green living:

Lazy Vegan Recipe: Thai spiced Beetroot and Cashew Soup

It’s early December and the weather is chilly…it can only mean one thing; we’re in the deepest depths of beetroot season! My last three weekly veg boxes have been piled with this crimson root veg and there is only so many beetroot, apple and lemon juices you can make when all you want is a big bowl of chips!

But as Beetroot is such a fantastic source of betacarotene and folic acid – which is known to help cleanse the liver and assist in lowering chances of heart disease I thought it as high time I created a beetroot dish that would have me coming back for seconds!

This soup is soooo warming and moreish and actually makes an amazing base for a curry if made with less water. Try it with a big chunk of walnut bread and you will be in beetroot bliss!!

Your Green Life: Green Moxie

I’ve just returned from a week away exploring Edinburgh, Glasgow and Dartmoor with some of my best friends; and am now snuggled at home feeling well rested and full of happiness. Just a little time away have given me a much needed winter boost and filled me with fresh energy for December.

This new lease of life is very apt, as this weeks interview is with a woman whose energy and passion for sustainability was a big inspiration to starting A Lazy Girl Goes Green earlier this year. Nikki Fotheringham – the brain child behind Toronto based green living website Green Moxie – is always full of fun and quirky ideas for upcycing and beauty DIY (like this awesome natural eyeshadow) which would make anyone want to reach for the glue gun. I wanted to pick her creative brain, and find out what inspires her across the Atlantic.

Lazy Vegan Recipe: Spiced Mandarin Chocolate & Seed Thins

Om nom nom nom……..that’s the best introduction I can give to these delicious little bites of loveliness!

I created this recipe when I had a particularly strong chocolate craving late on Saturday evening and only had drinking chocolate flakes in the house. “Fear not!” I told myself; this wasn’t any old drinking chocolate, this was Eden Project Spice Mandarin Drinking Chocolate, which was in fact real life cocoa solids. Perfect for melting into something tasty.

I just mixed up the melted chocolate and coconut oil with whatever nuts and seeds were lying around, but it’s so quick and easy you could experiment further by adding pieces of candied orange peel, currents or ginger. Anything to add an even more festive feel.

So when everyone is reaching for the quality streets at Christmas, I’ll have my very own vegan treat up my sleeve!

Your Green Life: Gordon Seabright (Eden project)

This weeks interview has a more personal touch to it, as it happens to be the Director of my own wonderful place of work; the Eden Project! When I began working here, over 3 years ago, I had little knowledge of the world of sustainability, and even less awareness of just how much our life depends on the plants and animals we share this planet with.

But over the years I have learnt so much, and this stunning place – in the heart of Cornwall – continues to inspire me. I know it’s had a effect on the way I see the world and how I live to respect it; so I was intrigued to how other employees feel about sustainability as a result. Well, who better to ask than a key figure behind one of the UKs most popular tourist attractions and  educational charities?!

Here, Director Gordon Seabright tells me all about his journey to eden, his personal motivations for greener living, and why cycling through London is just too fun to give up…. Continue reading Your Green Life: Gordon Seabright (Eden project)

Make your own ‘living’ table centrepiece

‘Tis the season to sit around the table and share food with loved ones. The one thing about Christmas I can’t be a Grinch about! I love seeing everyone sat around the table, with our personalised napkins (that my mum lovingly sewed for us), and a few candles lighting our smiling faces. We all have our own table traditions; from our “special” cutlery to how we dress it to look pretty.

personal napkin

I love the idea of a big center piece on a dinner table to mark a special occasion, but have always been reluctant to buy anything (and am never creative enough to design something myself) .

But recently my friend Dee at ItDoesTheJob.com told me about their ‘waste free’ living table centerpiece, following one of their successful sustainable suppers. I loved the idea so much I asked if they could share some simple steps to how someone lazy or not very creative could make such a masterpiece.  Continue reading Make your own ‘living’ table centrepiece
