A Question of Ethics: Dairy Farming

Milk: the “nutritious” white stuff that played a huge part of my childhood memories; from drinking vats of banana Nesquik, to turning it multi-coloured in my Lucky Charms cereal. We were advised to drink it daily, and were outraged when Margaret Thatcher “took it away from us” in the 80s.

According to This is Dairy Farming, British dairy farmers produce around 11 billion litres of milk annually; of which 5 billion litres is sold for drinking, and 6 billion litres is used for dairy products such as cheese and butter. We really do love the stuff!

It’s been in my life for nearly 30 years and a key part of our nation’s diet; so – as a vegan – what’s my beef (pardon the pun) with milk now? Well, it wasn’t until I actually knew where milk came from, and how it’s made, that my taste for dairy soured altogether. I used to love creamy yogurts, and sprinkled cheese on almost everything. Now, not only do I avoid the stuff, I disagree with the ethics of the whole industry entirely.

I personally found my discoveries of the dairy industry rather emotional – so much so that I became vegan as soon as I found out. But in order to really explore the ethics, I want to let the facts speak for themselves; and allow others to share their thoughts and experiences of dairy farming. So here goes… Continue reading A Question of Ethics: Dairy Farming

5 Steps to a Plastic Free Bathroom: My Lush Loot

Today I am a very happy lazy green lady indeed. After months of testing out various natural/vegan/ethical/ toiletries and never quite being inspired enough to review them here…I have found a regime that works! And the best thing of all? They’re all plastic free!

As a self confessed pamper-holic, I have literally tried dozens of hair products, toothpastes, shower gels etc over the last few months; desperately trying to find products that meet my ethics AND actually work. But the answer was right under my nose, in a place I had always disregarded as “that stinky place on the high street”. Continue reading 5 Steps to a Plastic Free Bathroom: My Lush Loot

Lazy Vegan Recipe: Spiced Apple Frangipane

In my opinion, it’s not October until you’ve consumed something involving spiced apple. Plus, Cornwall is thriving with apples at the moment and the cooler temperatures have me craving warming, spicy sweet treats!

After a number of fresh autumn walks this weekend – involving scarfs, thick socks and a few showers of rain – I decided to pimp up one of my favourite recipes, to add an October kick. Traditionally a frangipane is served cold, but I think a slice with some homemade (vegan…) custard is just what the weather man ordered! Continue reading Lazy Vegan Recipe: Spiced Apple Frangipane

Lazy Vegan Recipe: Summer Marrow Bolognaise Bake

Happy Meat Free Monday lazy Green people!

I don’t know about you, but I’m really starting to notice the autumn kicking in! The days are getting a little darker and it’s almost time to stop living in my flip flops! But I’m actually really excited – despite a sorrowful goodbye to the heat of summer – I’m really looking forward to comfy jumpers, hot chocolates and beautiful orange leafed trees.

To celebrate this borderline period between summer and autumn, I thought I would share this warming veggie Bolognese Bake, using the deliciously filling summer marrow. It’s a great gluten free recipe – as the marrow replaces lasagne sheets – and it’s naturally dairy free and vegan friendly. It’s also one of the laziest recipes I know, which can be easily adapted to whatever you have at home. Continue reading Lazy Vegan Recipe: Summer Marrow Bolognaise Bake

Lazy Vegan Recipe: 5 Minute Fruity Couscous

Meat free Monday lazy green people! Hope you had a lovely weekend and feeling peckish…I have a scrummy idea for you.

You can never have too many recipes which take just 5 minutes to make, especially when they are as versatile and delicious as fruity couscous! This dish can be served up hot with a veg stew or chickpea tagine; or cold as a salad or a quick fix lunch.

Now, this recipe is so quick and easy, that I feel a little cheeky posting it!! But it’s just as much about the inspiration than the method itself, plus I’m currently on holiday so sometimes you gotta take it easy…. Continue reading Lazy Vegan Recipe: 5 Minute Fruity Couscous

Lazy Recipe; Moist & Healthy Vegan Blueberry Muffins

Ok, so blueberry muffins are traditionally not too hard to create. And if you’re looking for inspiration, you should look no further than Vegan Muffin Woman, who’s stunning muffin recipes will make even the biggest vegan sceptic want to throw away their butter and munch on her sweet delights!

But….I like this muffin recipe lots and lots because not only are they quick, easy and very tasty; they are actually pretty healthy too! That’s because I let the berries do all the work when it comes to sweetness and moisture; so they don’t need much added sugar or fat. It also works well with raspberries.  Continue reading Lazy Recipe; Moist & Healthy Vegan Blueberry Muffins

Lazy Vegan Recipe: “cheesy” Scrambled Tofu with Garlic Mushrooms & Kale

As you might suspect, I love a good lie in. In fact, I love them so much I will often choose an extra 5 or 10 minutes in bed over allowing myself time for the basic things like brushing my hair or applying make-up. These things can easily be done on the run; as I pour my coffee or walk to work. Enjoying my relaxed dream state and snuggling under the warm covers for a few more minutes, on the other hand, cannot.

Breakfast is no exception to this shift of priorities, and often my first meal of the day is consumed in the bedroom getting dressed, breathlessly on my walk to work or worse still, not at all. Once in a blue moon I may have been super organised and made a healthy vegetable juice in preparation the night before; but even this is gulped down 2 seconds before I brushing my teeth and running out of the door!

But weekends – especially those with no particular plans or deadlines – I can really go to town and cook myself up a fuel friendly feast, to start my day off with a bang! So this week I wanted to share a favourite vegan breakfast recipe of mine; which takes about 10 minutes to cook and is jam packed with yumminess to slow you down, so you can enjoy every last bite! Lazy Vegan Recipe: Crispy Almond Polenta Balls

Yay! It’s Meat Free Monday again, and I have a bit of a naughty treat for you!

I made these Crispy Almond Polenta Bites this weekend when I was craving some yummy fried goodness, which you often don’t have as a Vegan. Generally my diet consists of tofu, beans, lentils and a whole load of fresh vegetables; but sometimes you just need a little naughtiness!

Whilst I admit this recipe isn’t that lazy (they do take a while to prepare) it does make 20 or so balls; so you can freeze them for another time when you don’t fancy cooking. They are a perfect alternative to meatballs with spaghetti, as party nibbles or cold with hummus on a salad. Continue reading Lazy Vegan Recipe: Crispy Almond Polenta Balls
